Where to sign up
You enroll in Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, through Social Security, not through an insurance agent. You have three options:
- Online at ssa.gov, usually the fastest.
- By phone at 1-800-772-1213.
- In person at the Social Security field office at 27200 Tourney Road, Suite 320, Valencia, CA 91355. Check hours and whether you need an appointment before you go.
Once you have Part A and Part B, you choose how to receive the rest of your coverage. That is where Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D come in, and where I can help.
Free, unbiased counseling: HICAP
Every state has a State Health Insurance Program that offers free Medicare counseling. In California it is called HICAP, the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program. HICAP counselors do not sell insurance. You can reach them at 1-800-434-0222. In Los Angeles County, HICAP is provided by the Center for Health Care Rights.
I mention HICAP on every page of this site on purpose. I do not offer every plan available in your area. If you want to see every option, HICAP and Medicare.gov can show you.
What to check if you live here
Medicare Advantage networks in our area are often built around medical groups, not just individual doctors. That means the most important question is sometimes not whether a plan covers your doctor, but whether it covers your doctor through the medical group they belong to.
- Your medical group. Ask your doctor's office which medical group they belong to and which plans they accept for next year.
- Your hospital. If you would want to use Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital or a specific hospital over the hill, confirm it is in the plan's network.
- Your specialists. Cardiology, oncology, and other specialists may be in a different group than your primary care doctor.
- Your pharmacy. Confirm it is in network, and whether it is a preferred pharmacy.
- Your ZIP code. Plan options can differ across the valley.
